UFL Conference Championship Games this weekend

Is football supposed to be fun?

Well, of course it is.

Remember Petey from “Remember The Titans?”

Of course, remember coach Herman Boone’s answer? Football Zero Fun Sir (youtube.com).

In spite of Coach Boone, we’re all going to have a little fun this weekend with the very first UFL Conference Championship Games: the USFL Conference Championship Game today, when the Birmingham Stallions (9-1) host the Michigan Panthers (7-3), at 3 p.m. Eastern / 2 p.m. Central on ABC, and then Sunday evening, when the St. Louis Battlehawks (7-3) host San Antonio (7-3) at 7 Eastern / 6 Central on FOX.

Eric Williams wrote this excellent preview (The UFL | UFL playoffs: What to watch for in Panthers-Stallions, Brahmas-Battlehawks) for the UFL’s website for both games.

A few tidbits from that preview: Birmingham is 5-0 at home this year, is playing for its third straight championship (although to win the UFL title, they’d have to win this week and next), the Stallions have won 30 games the last three years; Birmingham has never lost to Michigan; St. Louis swept San Antonio this season, and has never lost to the Brahmas; San Antonio is hoping to get quarterback Chase Garbers back this week; Brahmas kicker Andre Szmyt is 19-of-21 on field goals this year, and his long is from 61 yards; St. Louis quarterback A.J. McCarron, who has been a bit banged up with an injured ankle, looks to be a go for Sunday.
