No longer can it be said that the Arlington Renegades are winless in the United Football League.
After coming close, and not-so-close, on a few occasions through the first six weeks of the season, the Renegades got that win on Saturday, beating visiting Memphis, 47-23, at Choctaw Stadium.
Arlington had 415 total yards, scored 25 points in the first half alone, got three touchdown passes from Luis Perez, one from back-up Lindsey Scott Jr., and four sacks, two interceptions and two forced fumbles by their defense.
Sal Cannella caught a 9-yard pass from Scott to open the scoring, and after Memphis got a 54-yard field goal from Matt Coghlin, J.P. Payton grabbed a 24-yard touchdown from Perez, then Cannella caught the two-point conversion pass. Arlington was up 14-3 with 14:11 left in the half.
De’Veon Smith ran for a 1-yard score and upped the lead to 22-3, and they would take a 25-9 lead into the half after Jonathan Garibay booted a 39-yard field goal at the buzzer.
Memphis had a rough day, but did get a couple of second-half touchdowns, one by quarterback Troy Williams and another an 8-yard catch by Vinny Papale Jr. from Case Cookus.
It’s week seven, though, with four games to go: Memphis and Arlington each need to heat up, each with only one win.
Memphis (1-6) visits Michigan next Saturday, a 4 p.m. ET / 3 Central start at Ford Field on FOX, and Arlington (1-6) plays at San Antonio on Sunday, also a 4 p.m. / 3 p.m. start at The Alamodome, and also on FOX.
