Well, here’s proof that even the No. 1 overall draft pick can have a bad day at the office.

Apparently, new Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams did just that Thursday at an OTA practice, enough that he had to get words of encouragement from some of his new teammates (Bears vets lift up Caleb Williams after struggles in practice).

“It’s frustrating,” wide receiver D.J. Moore said, of learning a new offense under new coordinator Shane Waldron, noting that it was far from Williams, “but we also know we’re learning a new system. “Yeah, you’ve got to (tell Williams) because our defense can get pretty rowdy, as you all know out there. Just calming everybody down in the huddle and just refocusing is the best thing.”

Williams completed only three passes in the practice, out of about seven, in a 7-on-7 drill, and completed about seven passes of about 20 attempts in the Thursday session overall. But Zack Pearson of Bear Report did report (sorry about the redundancy) that Williams didn’t have receivers Keenan Allen or Rome Odunze (the rookie from Washington) for the practice, so there’s that.

Bears head coach Matt Eberflus said the ups and downs are going to cycle – not just for Williams, the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner, but for everybody. “This is the first time going against a pro defense, and a pretty good one,” Eberflus said. “It’s going to be learning for everybody. They’re getting everything together. It was progress. I saw progress from the first day to the second, the second to the third. So it’s good.”
