Panthers earn top pick, have to give it to Bears; owner decides to douse Jags fans

“And with the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft…”

We’re four months and change away from that event, and yet we know today who will make that pick – unless, of course, it’s traded away.

And it won’t be the team that earned it.

The Carolina Panthers every bit earned it by virtue of being the worst team in the league this year, and with a week left in the season, even, they’ve clinched the worst record – the Panthers are 2-14, with one game left to go (at home against Tampa Bay).

However, the Panthers have to give the pick to Chicago, by virtue of a trade they made in the offseason.

Carolina lost 26-0 to Jacksonville on Sunday, clinching the worst record and the pick for the Bears, who own it because they traded last year’s No. 1 overall pick to Carolina, so that the Panthers could pick quarterback Bryce Young.

In exchange for the pick, Carolina sent the No. 9 and No. 61 picks in last year’s draft, this year’s first-round pick, a 2025 second-rounder and wide receiver D.J. Moore to Chicago.

This year’s first-round pick turns into No. 1 overall by virtue of how poorly of a season Carolina has had. Salt gets rubbed into the wound when you consider that Moore had his best year ever (92 catches for 1,300 yards and eight touchdowns), and the Bears right now would have the No. 1 overall and No. 10 overall picks, although that No. 10 pick could change, based on what happens in the final week.

Carolina owner David Tepper apparently didn’t have a very good Sunday, either.

In video seen here (LOOK: Panthers owner David Tepper appears to throw drink at Jaguars fan during Carolina’s 26-0 shutout loss – CBSSports.com) and about 1,000,000 other places, Tepper appears to throw a drink out of his open-air suite at a Jacksonville Jaguars fan during the team’s shutout loss.

The team fired coach Frank Reich weeks ago, after going 1-10, and Young has had a rough rookie year.
