If you’re into prop bets – like betting whether or not Alabama’s Jalen Milroe will throw for four touchdown passes in a game, or even throw two interceptions a game – then the head of the NCAA would like a word with you.
Charlie Baker, the president of the NCAA, wants a ban on those type of bets on college sports (NCAA president Charlie Baker calls for ban on college prop bets).
“Sports betting issues are on the rise across the country with prop bets continuing to threaten the integrity and competition and leading to student athletes and professional athletes getting harassed. The NCAA has been working with states to deal with these threats and many are responding by banning college prop bets,” Baker said, in a release.
In the ESPN story, it’s explained that the Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter is being examined by the NBA for two games where Porter left both early, and as a result of Porter leaving, anyone who had the “under” – Porter having less of certain stats – won their bets.
Baker is apparently cautious – some might say paranoid – that such bets and activity (assuming there were irregularities) will become a “thing.”
“This week we will be contacting officials across the country in states that still allow these bets and ask them to join Ohio, Vermont, Maryland and many others and remove college prop bets from all betting markets,” Baker said. “The NCAA is drawing the line on sports betting to protect student-athletes and to protect the integrity of the game – issues across the country these last several days show there is more work to be done.”
