Mississippi State coaching search officially shifts into overdrive right freaking now

Mississippi State didn't exactly have a banner year, winning only one Southeastern Conference game, and this one against Kentucky (above) wasn't it. Coach Zach Arnett was fired, and the Bulldogs are looking for a new head coach. Could a former head coach be returning? (Photo by ALEX NABOR - THEFOOTBALLBEAT.COM)

Mississippi State football needs a lift, no question.

Right now, unless you’re an Ole Miss Rebel, you just really gotta feel bad for ‘em.

They lost coach Mike Leach, who passed away after last season, and then elevated defensive coordinator Zach Arnett to head coach.

That was understandable – Arnett’s defense, after all, was a very good unit, and Leach often praised Arnett’s preparation. It appeared to be a good decision by MSU brass.

Until it wasn’t. Arnett (somewhat arrogantly, from my perspective) tossed out Leach’s offense, or at least his new offensive coordinator did) went his own way offensively, and found himself out 10 months later.

Thursday night, the Bulldogs lost at home to their biggest rival (or maybe their SECOND-biggest – Alabama is the biggest, to some MSU fans), and now, the focus turns to hiring a new head coach.

Here’s a good article from Stefan Krajisnik of the state’s largest paper, The Clarion Ledger in Jackson, who often appears on The Paul Finebaum Show on the SEC Network (Mississippi State football: Dan Mullen, other coaching candidates).
