McKinnon (looks to be) in, Toney out for Super Bowl

The Kansas City Chiefs activated a former San Francisco 49er on Saturday, the day before playing said 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

And the receiver who committed perhaps the most famous – or infamous – offsides-on-the-offense penalty in NFL history for sure won’t be in the line-up.

Kansas City pushed running back Jerrick McKinnon to the active roster (Chiefs activate RB Jerick McKinnon, ESPN), although his status is uncertain for the Super Bowl.

Sources within the franchise apparently told ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter that McKinnon is a game time decision. McKinnon has been used mostly as a receiver out of the backfield this season: he has 60 yards rushing and a touchdown, but 25 catches for 192 yards and four touchdowns – not really a surprise, given the coach and the team for which he plays.

We may not know yet about whether or not McKinnon will play (yes, we do: it’s Andy Reid’s team, he’ll likely play), but we do know about wide receiver Kadarius Toney.

Toney, who was flagged for being offsides on a play that negated a touchdown in a loss to Buffalo earlier this year in Kansas City, has 27 catches for 169 yards and a touchdown this year, his production down from the 2022 season where he helped the Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl.

Reid was questioned whether or not Toney would play in Sunday’s game earlier this week, and his answer was, “We’ll see.”

It MAY not be the case, but it SEEMS Toney got into Reid’s doghouse – and perhaps Mahomes’ doghouse, as well – after that penalty was one of the plays that cost the Chiefs the game against rival Buffalo. Reid and Mahomes both came off as sore losers complaining about the call after the game, when it was clearly a legitimate penalty, and the Chiefs wound up having to go to Buffalo in the playoffs, although they held off the Bills and eventually advanced not only past that game, of course, but all the way to Super Bowl LVIII.
