He might have acted like a complete arse, but give Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes credit for now knowing that he acted like a complete arse, and for trying to walk it back.

After losing his mind on the sidelines Sunday and trying to get at an official following the realization that, yes, they were going to lose, 20-17, to Buffalo and that yes, offsides had been called on Kadarius Toney and that yes, Toney is an offensive player and that yes, it negated the go-ahead touchdown, Mahomes allowed himself to melt even further in front of reporters after the game.

On Monday, in a radio interview with 610 (AM) Sports Radio in Kansas City, the two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback perhaps realized that what he did Sunday – well, it was a bad look, after all (Patrick Mahomes regrets outburst, interaction with Josh Allen – ESPN).

“Obviously I’ve seen it now,” Mahomes said, of the referees’ flag on Toney for being offsides on the negated scoring play, “and if he didn’t check and they weren’t good, it is a foul. It is something you rarely see called in the NFL. But it was a foul, it’s part of playing the game, man. You learn from it, it’s part of being a person, you learn from your mistakes and try to be better next time.”

The Chiefs, driving with just over a minute left at home, trailing the Bills 20-17, lined up at the Bills’ 49-yard-line and Mahomes passed downfield to tight end Travis Kelce. Toney, running in Kelce’s direction, caught a lateral from Kelce on the play and appeared to have scored. But the flag on him for being offsides nullified the score, and three straight Mahomes incomplete passes later, and the Chiefs had their second straight loss – and an 8-5 record.

Mahomes lost it on the sidelines and had to be restrained from going after the official.

More comments from Mahomes from the radio interview on Monday:

“”Obviously you don’t want to react that way, I mean, I care, man. I love it — I love this game, and I love my teammates. I want to go out there and put everything on the line to win, but obviously you can’t do that, can’t be that way toward officials or really anybody in life,” Mahomes said. “…I hate the way I acted toward Josh [Allen] after the game, because he had nothing to do with it.”

The Chiefs visit the New England Patriots (3-10) on Sunday – the Patriots are coming off a win for the first time in a while, having upset the Pittsburgh Steelers in Pittsburgh last week.
