Lutz misses, gets second shot, sinks Bills… who sank themselves

Admit it: when you saw ABC’s “Monday Night Football” menu had the Denver Broncos at the Buffalo Bills this week, you either skipped it or seriously thought about it.

And it ended up being one of the most entertaining games of the year.

Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen, tragic figure that he is at times, hero at others, put the Bills in front with the team’s first lead late, the Broncos drove down for a potential game-winning field goal from 41 yards out. Wil Lutz originally missed the kick, but – as luck (and maybe coaching, and stupid, boneheaded mistakes) would have it, the Bills’ luck on the night – Buffalo had 12 men on the field.

Lutz got a do-over. And the do-over did-in the Bills, a 24-22 loss that dropped Buffalo to 5-5 on the season. (Lutz is good on second chance with 36-yard field goal in Broncos’ 24-22 win over Bills)

Wow, just wow.

The Broncos are 4-5, have won three straight, and have the next two games at home: Minnesota on Sunday night, then Cleveland on Nov. 26.

As for Buffalo…

“The clock is ticking,” Allen said afterward, apparently talking about the Bills’ playoff clock. And he’s right.

The Bills’ upcoming schedule: they host the Jets on Sunday; they visit defending NFC champ Philadelphia on Sunday, Nov. 26; an open date on Dec. 3; then at Kansas City Dec. 10.

Other than the bye, hardly a cakewalk.
