The Kansas City Chiefs might – might – very well be the best team in the NFL.
Or it might be the NFC’s Detroit Lions.
The Lions cruised again on Sunday on the road, taking down the Indianapolis Colts, 24-6, in Lucas Oil Stadium.
At this point, Detroit is making it look easy.
Which longtime NFL fans reading this EVER thought you’d hear THAT?
The Lions got two touchdown runs from second-year standout Jahmyr Gibbs, one from David Montgomery, and their defense didn’t allow the Colts a touchdown in Detroit’s ninth straight win. Detroit is 10-1 – the first time that’s happened since 1934. Oh, and by the way: they’re undefeated (6-0) in road games.
Indy (5-7) led early on a field goal, after the first drive of the game stalled out at the Lions’ 5-yard-line.
Gibbs gave the Lions a 7-3 lead on a 1-yard run in the second quarter, and after the Colts cut it to one point (7-6) on another field goal, Montgomery got free for a 6-yard score to give Detroit a 14-6 lead, one it would not relinquish.
It went up to 21-6 in the third quarter on another run by Gibbs, this one from 5 yards out, and then kicker Jake Bates hit a 56-yard field goal in the fourth for the game’s final score.
Of note: Gibbs’ run in the second quarter for the touchdown meant the Lions have now scored a touchdown run in 25 straight games, an NFL record.
Goff went 26-of-36 for 269 yards. Amon-Ra St. Brown had six of them, for 62 yards.
Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson went 11-of-28 for 172 yards and ran for 61 yards on 10 carries.
The Lions will be home Thursday at 11:30 a.m. Central time on CBS against the Chicago Bears. Indianapolis heads to New England on Sunday, a noon Central start, also on CBS.
