Before the game, the Jacksonville Jaguars didn’t even know for certain that they’d even have quarterback Trevor Lawrence in the line-up.
Good thing they did.
Lawrence went 20-of-29 for 204 yards and a 44-yard scoring pass to Christian Kirk to help give the Jaguars a 31-24 win at New Orleans on Thursday night (Trevor Lawrence comes through late and the Jaguars hold off the Saints, 31-24).
Kirk, who had a noteworthy celebration after the touchdown that apparently was supposed to be a house call (Christian Kirk TD Catch from Trevor Lawrence) – did most of the work on the score. It was a short pass, but it did break a 24-24 tie with just over three minutes left, and the Jacksonville defense did the rest, although Saints quarterback Derek Carr did give his team a chance before they collapsed late.
It looked like the Saints might have a chance to tie or go in front when they got inside Jacksonville’s 10-yard-line with a minute left, but the Saints called four straight pass plays and all four fell incomplete, including a pass that tight end Foster Moreau had a chance to get in the end zone, and a fourth-down pass to Chris Olave.
Moreau had to be lifted up by teammates following the game, apparently feeling he should have caught the pass, the one that got away.
“It doesn’t come down to one play,” Carr said. “There’s so many things that we could have done.”
Carr went 33-of-55 for 301 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown to Michael Thomas. And running back Alvin Kamara had 153 total yards.
But the Saints fall to 3-4 on the season after back-to-back losses. They’ll play at Indianapolis next Sunday.
The Jaguars move to 5-2 this year, and will visit Pittsburgh next Sunday.
