It begins: seven bowl games on Saturday

The college bowl season is officially upon us today, with seven – 7! – bowl games scheduled for Saturday.

Obviously, some of them overlap, but hey: we’re providing the kickoff times and previews for you right here, with help from the Associated Press, and you guys can come back here later today for a wrap-up of all of them, if you’d like.

We’re actually staffing one today: the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana, between Texas Tech (6-6) and Cal (6-6). In fact, by the time the bowl games are complete, The Football Beat will have covered more than our share of bowls, including two of the four New Year’s Six bowl games.

So, here you are: previews of the seven games on Saturday, kickoffs listed at Central Standard Time…

Myrtle Beach Bowl (Brooks Stadium, Conway, South Carolina): Georgia Southern (6-6) vs. Ohio (9-3), 10 a.m., ESPN (Ohio goes for second straight 10-win season against Georgia Southern in Myrtle Beach Bowl )

Cricket Celebration Bowl (Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, GA): Howard (6-5) vs. Florida A&M (11-1), 11 a.m., ABC (SWAC’s Florida A&M brings 10-game winning streak into Celebration Bowl against MEAC’s Howard)

R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl (Caesars Superdome, New Orleans, La.): Jacksonville State (8-4) vs. Louisiana (6-6), 1:15 p.m., ESPN (New Orleans Bowl regular Louisiana-Lafayette meets FBS newcomer Jacksonville State)

Avocados From Mexico Cure Bowl (FBC Mortgage Stadium, Orlando): Appalachian State (8-5) vs. Miami, Ohio (11-2), 2:30 p.m., ABC (Appalachian State, Miami (Ohio) look to cap strong seasons with win at Cure Bowl)

Isleta New Mexico Bowl (University Stadium, Albuquerque, NM): New Mexico State (10-4) vs. Fresno State (8-4), 4:45 p.m., ESPN (Fresno State heading to familiar turf to face New Mexico State in the New Mexico Bowl)

L.A. Bowl (SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, Calif.): UCLA (7-5) vs. Boise State (8-5), 6:30 p.m., ABC (Boise State turns to freshman QB against UCLA in LA Bowl)

Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl (Independence Stadium, Shreveport, La.): Cal (6-6) vs. Texas Tech (6-6), 8:15 p.m., ABC (Texas Tech, Cal showcase elite running backs in Independence Bowl)
