Fields’ he-said, he-said with himself, apparently

Could Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields’ problems be rooted in the way he’s being coached?

Fields seemed to pose that prospect himself on Wednesday.

In what’s becoming like an old 1980’s mix-tape, Fields’ comments have been made, walked back, walked back more, hashed and re-hashed, in several places.

We found a story that pretty much clears everything up, and we want to give Carmen Vitali of FoxSports.com credit for writing it. So we’re calling attention to it here.

Her story – Justin Fields says he was misquoted. We unpack everything the Bears QB said Wednesday | FOX Sports – breaks down the timeline of what happened, what Fields said and what is alleged, and how it’s been walked back and what is hoped to be gained by walking it back, it seems.

Vitali even includes this quote from Bears General Manager Ryan Poles: “In terms of Justin, I can’t be more clear than this — no one in our entire building, none of our coaches, see Justin as a finger-pointer at all,” Poles said. “He has always taken ownership of anything that’s happened on the field. He takes it head-on, works, he grinds, he puts his head down. He works with his teammates, he works with his coaches, to find solutions … Everyone’s trying to figure out what’s going on, in my opinion, you got a young quarterback trying to figure it out.”

And there’s more to the piece, which we encourage reading.

What we don’t encourage is more of the same from Fields and the Bears. If the Bears are indeed shackling Fields, how about taking those shackles off? The last two weeks, Fields seems tentative, and even unsure of himself. No young quarterback can develop without confidence.

Here’s hoping we see the flashes of brilliance in Fields’ game on Sunday in Kansas City that make him so fun to watch – and that it becomes the norm, not the outlier.
