Add Clemson coach Dabo Swinney and Colorado coach Deion Sanders to the growing list of coaches that have been asked about the Texas A&M University football coaching vacancy (Clemson’s Dabo Swinney on Texas A&M Opening: ‘It Must Be November…All I Can Say’).
Like anybody is going to say, “Yeah, I’m interested; I don’t really care about my current job. Put me down for that.”
Swinney, who has two national championship trophies in the case at Clemson and has long been tied to his alma mater, Alabama, should Nick Saban retire, was apparently asked about any interest in the A&M job on Tuesday, according to The State.
“I’m just focused on the job,” was Swinney’s response. “… Always have been. Just trying to beat North Carolina. It must be November. That’s all I can say.”
Obviously, that’s not any kind of comment at all, one way or another.
It’s been tough sledding for Swinney and the Tigers this year: they’re 6-4, and Tyler from Spartanburg really got under Swinney’s skin recently (Tyler from Spartanburg vs Dabo Swinney Full Interview ).
For the record, Sanders, who’s 56 years old and in his first major coaching job (he previously coached at Jackson State in Jackson, Mississippi), said he’s more focused on this Friday’s road game at Washington State.
“I want to win a game,” Sanders said. “You think I really do think I sit down and think about that kind of stuff? What strikes you about me that you guys really think I sit down say, ‘Aw, yeah, Stephen A.’ C’mon, I’m good. We’ve got to win.”
The ‘Stephen A.’ he referenced was, of course, Stephen A. Smith of ESPN fame. It should be noted that Sanders signed a $29.5 million, five-year contract with Colorado last December, not that coaching contracts aren’t made to be bought out.
Both of Sanders’ sons – quarterback Shedeur Sanders and defensive back Shilo Sanders, play for the Buffaloes, and transferred already, couldn’t do so again without the penalty of sitting.
“I tell them what I told them when they came: I’m here,” Sanders went on to say. “I tell them my mother’s here, my sister’s here, my dog is here, my daughter’s here, three of my sons are here, my other daughter comes to darn near every home game. We’re here.I get mail here, I pay taxes here. I don’t hear that. Maybe our recruiting staff hears it, but I don’t hear it. I’m too honest with parents. I’m going to tell them the truth.”
