That sound you heard this afternoon was a collective “Uh-Oh” from Kansas City Chiefs fans worldwide.
Tight end Travis Kelce, who once auditioned to be an NFL referee on the field (Travis Kelce Ejected for Throwing His Towel at the Ref! | Jaguars vs. Chiefs | NFL – YouTube), but is more famous for helping the Chiefs win a pair of Super Bowl championships, is injured the week the season begins.
The Associated Press reported Tuesday afternoon that Kelce’s knee is hyperextended (Chiefs’ All-Pro TE Travis Kelce hyperextends knee in practice for opener vs Detroit | Hosted (ap.org), that he did it in practice Tuesday, and that tests following the practice show no ligament damage.
The Chiefs, the defending Super Bowl champions, open the 2023 season at home Thursday night on NBC against the Detroit Lions, a 7:20 p.m. kickoff.
Kelce, 33, missed a game with a knee injury in his rookie season in 2013, but hasn’t missed one since. Last season, which culminated with the Chiefs beating the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl, Kelce had 110 catches for 1,338 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Will quarterback Patrick Mahomes have to go without his security blanket Thursday night in the league’s prime time opener on NBC?
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, NBC executives and every single Chiefs fan everywhere are now holding their collective breath.
