In a transaction straight out of “The Twilight Zone” (kids under 15, Google it), former Texas A&M offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino has agreed to terms to assume the same position at the University of Arkansas, according to this report by ESPN (Sources — Bobby Petrino to be Arkansas offensive coordinator), among others.
You know – one of the Aggies’ Southeastern Conference rivals.
You know – where Petrino once coached.
You know – where this photo was taken (Maybe Bobby Petrino can go to work for Mike Price (Sound Off) – al.com).
You know – the program where he was once in controversy for being involved in a motorcycle accident with an intern.
But forgive and forget, and apparently, a 4-7 season that the Hogs just completed allowed a lot of forgivin’ and forgettin,’ because they’re bringing back the 62-year-old former head coach to helm their offense.
Petrino and other members of Jimbo Fisher’s staff weren’t retained when Fisher was fired this season (technically on Nov. 12, although some members of the staff finished out the season, games against Abilene Christian and LSU).
It was thought among many in coaching circles that Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman could be in trouble (at least, his job could be in trouble) after the season concluded, especially given imbalanced losses at home to Auburn and Missouri, but Pittman was told this week by Arkansas officials he would be retained, apparently with certain conditions.
In the ESPN story link, it’s reported that Petrino is expected to be in Fayetteville Wednesday.
Petrino went 21-5 as Arkansas head coach before being fired for cause in 2012.
Petrino, by the way, replaces the fired offensive coordinator Dan Enos, who was dismissed in October.
Other stops for Petrino have included the offensive coordinator’s position at Auburn, the head coach of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, the head coach at Louisville (where he coached Lamar Jackson), the head coach at Western Kentucky, and most recently, the head coach at Missouri State, prior to his stint at A&M as OC.
