There have been Super Bowl matchups between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants that had less mystery than what’s surrounding the Patriots’ quarterback situation this week.
The Patriots – they of the 2-8 record in 2023 – are not stuck in neutral: they’re in full-stop, man. And coach Bill Belichick, one of the greatest professional football coaches ever to walk the sidelines in the National Football League (nobody can debate that one), hasn’t been able to pull them out of the tailspin they’ve been in.
Would a change at the starting quarterback position do it, say, this Sunday at the also-struggling New York Giants?
Belichick isn’t talking. He’s not saying whether incumbent starter Mac (& Cheese) Jones will get the start again, or if it’ll be Bailey Zappe, the former Western Kentucky standout that many would like to see, just to see if he can turn things the heck around. At this point, just to see if the Patriots’ offense has got another gear besides G – as in, ‘get us the crap out of this.’
When Belichick was asked Tuesday whether he’d made a decision on the starting quarterback for the Giants game, this was his answer, according to a story on FOXsports.com: “We’ll let you know on Sunday.” (Bill Belichick refuses to shed light on starting QB decision for Patriots)
Jones has been pulled a couple of times this season after starting them all. And when given the chance to shine, well – Zappe hasn’t exactly been Superman. He went 3-of-7 for 25 yards in Frankfurt, Germany against the Colts.
