Bears defensive coordinator Alan Williams resigns

Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Alan Williams has stepped down, according to a report on NFL.com.

Williams released a statement, which the site released in part here (Bears defensive coordinator Alan Williams resigns from position with team (nfl.com).

The Bears (0-2) play at – well, they play at about the worst possible place an 0-2 team could play if they wanted to win this week, which is defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City. The game is a 3:25 p.m. Central Standard Time start on CBS.

“I am taking a step back to take care of my health and my family. I appreciate the opportunity to work with the Chicago Bears, a storied NFL franchise with a rich history,” Williams said, in the statement. “The McCaskey family is first-class and second to none. I would also like to thank coach Matt Eberflus and general manager Ryan Poles for giving me the opportunity to come to Chicago. I would also like to thank president Kevin Warren, the coaches and players of which I value the relationships and camaraderie.

“I value the NFL shield and all that it stands for and after taking some time to address my health, I plan to come back and coach again.”

It was noted on the NFL.com report that Williams didn’t coach last week in the Bears’ loss at Tampa Bay, and that he has coached in the league since 2001.

The Bears have given up 766 yards through two games, against Green Bay and Tampa Bay (engineered by Jordan Love and Baker Mayfield, respectively), fourth-worst in the league – the L.A. Chargers have been the worst so far, allowing 877 yards through two games.
