When Nick Saban retired, a few players transferred from Alabama, and it garnered attention because a couple of them – defensive back Caleb Downs and quarterback Julian Sayin (both to Ohio State) – were high-profile recruits.

One of them – Kadyn Proctor, a starting offensive lineman who transferred to Iowa, his home-state school – even recently transferred back to the Crimson Tide (although that didn’t get widely-reported because it wasn’t sexy).

But what’s going on at Texas A&M?

Jacoby Mathews, a 6-foot-2, 215 pound safety, announced Tuesday that he’s leaving College Station, and he’s the 19th player to enter the transfer portal since former coach Jimbo Fisher was dismissed last fall during the regular season.

The news isn’t a surprise: The Athletic and on3.com, among others, reported that Mathews would be entering the portal at the first opportunity, and ESPN reported the news earlier today (Jacoby Mathews enters transfer portal, latest to leave Texas A&M).

Mathews had 42 tackles, an interception and four pass break-ups in 11 games last season and 10 the previous year.

Today is the first day that players can enter the portal and talk with coaches about transferring.

Rumored landing spots for Mathews? Southern Cal, Alabama, Georgia, and Michigan, the usual suspects.
