Well, Dallas Cowboys fans en masse weren’t too pleased when the team wasn’t very active in free agency last week – except for the departure of longtime Cowboys like offensive lineman Tyron Smith, linebacker Leighton Vander Esch (who retired on Monday) and wide receiver Michael Gallop.
Who knows how they’ll react to this news?
But the franchise has re-worked the contract of quarterback Dak Prescott, mainly to knock down some of the salary cap weight the club is under, and also getting ready to re-sign stars like pass rusher Micah Parsons and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.
The franchise is giving Prescott a $5 million signing bonus (from a roster bonus) to bring the cap number down by $4 million, Field Yates of ESPN reported (Sources – Cowboys rework Dak Prescott’s contract to reduce cap hit).
In the same story, it’s reported (in passing by Ed Werder) that the Cowboys are attempting to do another deal with their quarterback: a contract extension that could bring their salary cap number down even farther. Prescott signed his current deal in 2021 – a $160 million, four-year deal, a Cowboys’ record.
Prescott threw for 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns and nine interceptions, completing 69 percent of his passes this season. In his career, he’s thrown for 29,459 yards, 202 touchdowns and 74 picks, and completed right at 67 percent of his passes.
The Cowboys, though, had expectations of an NFC East Championship and at least a long playoff run, but the Green Bay Packers nipped that in the bud in the first round of the playoffs, causing many to think Cowboys owner Jerry Jones might make wholesale changes – starting at the top, with coach Mike McCarthy and maybe even Dak.
But it looks like they’ll both be back, and Prescott might be a lifer. Cowboys fans, are you braced for that?
